Deload Weeks: The Recovery Science of Training Less to Progress More — and When It Actually Helps

Here the honest account gets more interesting, because the evidence does not deliver an unqualified endorsement of deloading. It delivers something more useful: a picture of when it helps and when it may cost you.
The reassuring finding first. Multiple lines of research show that one to two weeks of substantially reduced training has negligible negative effects on strength and muscle mass in trained individuals. You do not lose your gains during a deload. The fear of detraining that keeps many people from ever backing off is, over a single week, essentially unfounded.
